cookies and aprons

I love cookies, I always have. And apparently, I am now having some sort of love affair with aprons. Its weird, having never worn an apron before, I now can't seem to cook or bake if not wearing one. Everything seems to look and taste better! And, I definitely dance better while wearing one too! :)

I made Libby and I coordinating ones. She cannot bake without wearing hers either. Isn't it funny how the littlest things make life more fun!

When school started last fall, we began our "cookie of the week" plan. Each week, one child took their turn going through cook books or our recipes and chose a cookie to try. They really loved this, and it made me try some new recipes. However, sometime after Halloween we stopped doing it. I don't know, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, may have had something to do with it. So, in an attempt to get back into the cookie groove, I am going to post our "cookie of the week". Because, cookies and knitting, well that's a good combo too!

This week was Charlies turn, and he chose Snicker doodles. It is my mothers recipe that we have enjoyed for years.
Snicker doodle Cookies:
1 cup Crisco
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 3/4 cup flour
2 tsp cream of tarter
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
Cream Crisco, sugar and eggs, add vanilla and then dry ingredients.........
Bake at 400 for 8-10 minutes for crunchy cookie
Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes for soft cookie
I forgot to tell you to roll into balls, and roll in cinnamon/sugar mixture......... (about 2 tps cinnamon with 1/4 cup sugar)

The cookie-a-week idea sounds like a lot of fun, but hard to maintain... And I've never heard of Snicker Doodle cookies. From their name, I thought there would be Snickers in it? They sound yummy!

  3. kids LOVE these cookies. And how cute are those? I need matching ones for me and Supergirl. Maybe we could do a swap? Yarn for aprons?

And that Libby looks like she's got some sass to her! :)

  4. oh, I just finished a snicker doodle for breakfast - it was a gift from a client, yummy. They taste like spring to me! Love the matching aprons, how fun!! (Have you seen the apron book?)

Kelli and I would BOTH like one! So cute..... and I would love a Snickerdoodle right now but will have to settle for the chocolate chips we made the other day. We're getting adventurous...we put pecans and coconut in them.

Your aprons are very, very cute. Did you use a pattern? If so, can you tell me the name of the pattern?

  9. I did not use a pattern. If you e-mail me I would be happy to tell you how to make one.........

Love the aprons! Great fabric, especially good to know that they work out well for dancing! No fun to bake and not dance.
The cookie a week idea is really fun. I am considering copying you, though perhaps we would do cookie a month. We have less cookie eaters here and a 2 yr old can only have so many cookies.

My grandma made some mean snicker doodles, and when I was in college she'd send a whole coffee tin full of them down to me. Yummmmm. Can't wait to see the socks!

Glad to have my computer back. I have missing looking at your blog. Your posts get more and more creative. It seems that you children have such a good time with your blog as well.

  13. I hear you about the apron!!

I like a full apron and started wearing one in the kitchen a few years back. Mainly cause I can't seem to cook/clean up without getting something on me. I am not interested in changing into "play" clothes to cook and so the option was a apon. No more ruined shirts and I hooked my neighbour into wearing one...when she saw me one time outside while in the middle of baking.....she loved it.

Love the matching ones you have there.

I have baked a little more with my youngest lately and you forget how nice it is. My older daughters loved baking and still do.

I will have to write that reciepe down....those look great!

  19. I just found your blog via the Jan/Feb Tie One On gallery. I absolutely love these "snicker doodle" aprons! And that you and your daughter have matching aprons. Too cute.

Love the idea of cookie of the week, too. I'm not yet a mother, but am mentally storing away the ideas I come across from all you fabulous blogging mommas. This one (complete with chalkboard cookie canister?) is going straight to the top of my list.

I just found this post from another blog, and I about fell off my chair--this is the same recipe my home ec teacher used to teach us how to bake in the sixth grade!! I was so chuffed at having successfully made them at school, so I started baking them at home until my family got really, really sick of snickerdoodles ;)
