pick a pocket

Monday, August 30, 2010

I haven't knit many garments with pockets. (Some a pretty long time ago, well before the old blog.) Thinking that the last sweater I made with pockets was the Farmers Market Cardi, but that had a completely different way of making those pockets. There are the patch pockets, pockets with flaps, side-seam pockets, pouch pockets, cut-in pockets and inset pockets. (I may be missing a one or two.)
Inset pockets happen to be my favorite and the method of choice written in the pattern for my new project.
You make the lining before, then after you bind off the front piece, you pick up and knit across the lining stitches. Thus, creating a layer of pieces. Hence, your pocket!

I'm pretty crazy about that wickerwork stitch pattern. A pattern, coupled with a bit of stockinette... perfect! Also loving another project on big needles -size 11.
Off to find something to prepare for dinner. I'm already bored with my cooking choices.
Have a great one.

  7. A nice big knit for Fall, can't wait to see it finished. Wonder how long it takes you to make something like this, I fear it would take me too long and it would end up a UFO!

  9. Now that you mention it, I don't think I've EVER made a garment with a pocket. Weird! Thirty years of knitting and no pocket?! Maybe I'll rectify that with this pattern - it's another great pick!

  10. Leslie, I am another fan of the pocket method you prefer. I first tried that technique out decades ago with a Sasha Kagan waistcoat pattern and really liked the result.

Why do it any other way?

    Your new knitting is beautiful.

  18. Are you using the same yarn? The wickerwork pattern seems a lot more clear in your swatch (I'm assuming it is a large swatch) than it does on the Berocco site.

I'm making the same sweater !!
I have narrow shoulders and I hope I like the fit since the neck side on the front doesn't narrow as you get closer to the top. Was also thinking of a crocheted row or 2 on the edge to give it a more finished look.... any thoughts on that ?

  28. Hey I see that you have a lot of experience knitting and I was wondering if you have any ideas on a project I'm working on, it's a university project that involves knitting tubes. But we keep getting creases in the tube and it doesn't look very nice, do you have any idea of what we could do?
