every day in the month of may

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good day, good month!

My sisters and I (and I am trying to drag a few local friends along) are going to do a green smoothie challenge in the month of May. I've seen these around the blogosphere but have never hopped on the wagon. In an effort to always try to feel our best we thought this would be fun. (Yes, fun!) So, every day in May we will be blending up some green goodness.
I made my first one yesterday while on the phone with my sister. I told her, "this is going to be easy... mine looks like a chocolate shake"! I used 2 cups of frozen fruit (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries) 1 frozen banana, water and 2 cups of packed baby spinach. It was good. Honestly. I bought kale today and plan on mostly using that. Feel free to join along!
There will still be cookies baked over here. Peanut Butter-Chocolate Chip Oatmeal cookies were this weeks cookie of the week. A home run. Everyone loved them, and I especially loved the dough. Biting into a peanut + chocolate chip = delicious.
Have a wonderful weekend.

  1. Good for you!! I recently did an elimination diet in which you drink only green smoothies for the first two days. There are some great smoothie (and other) recipes on the site.

I don't know that I've ever posted a comment on your blog before but I really enjoy it. Most of the things I've knit lately have either been one of your patterns or patterns you've recommended. Thanks!

  4. I think the "Green Smoothie" idea sounds great. I am always trying to get in more greens and vegies and for some reason lately I am just feeling run down. This sounds like a good solution, I'm on board as soon as I get to the store for some kale and spinach.

  5. I am definitely making those cookies this weekend. My favorite are oatmeal cookie variations, and my husband's favorite is peanut butter cookies, so this will be the perfect recipe. Thanks for sharing!

  9. I have been doing the challenge with my family for the past weeks, and I can honestly say that we all feel a difference. We had been drinking them on and off for a few years, but there has been no comparision in drinking them everyday. Hope you enjoy the weekend

  10. Great idea! I might have to join you in the challenge. I watched the Vita-Mix demo at Costco and ended up buying one. They made a spinach, pineapple and orange smoothie and it was really good.

I made one at home with what I had around and it wasn't so good (avoid using only grapefruit, berries, and spinach. toooo tart. I added OJ and it was much better.)

I just found your blog recently - I'll be back for more!

Having read your blog for awhile now, I'm often inspired--and today for sure! Maybe the smoothie thing will be just the thing to perk me up a bit.

PS the cookies look good and I had to smile when you said the dough was good--I always taste my doughs (to include bread dough) and batters, figuring if they taste good, then the finished product should too!

  22. I make smoothies for my boys a lot. As long as I put in enough blueberries so it doesn't look green, they'll eat them with broccoli, spinach, kale, swiss chard, whatever! Makes it easier to give them the cookies.

  23. Wow Leslie, that looks..........weird! ha ha, I usually do a smoothie with blueberries and it turns out a lovely purple, I'm not quite sure about the brown? I may just have to try this though ;-)

  24. I love green smoothies! I crave them at least 3 times a week. You can also make Kale (spinach, etc.) ice cubes http://sarahs-musings.blogspot.com/2008/01/excuse-me-but-i-think-you-have.html
and throw those in! Yummy and easier to keep around than fresh kale all the time.
The cookies look absolutely delicious also.

  25. I've been doing green smoothies for about two weeks now--they are so wonderful. I love being able to stop home in the middle of the day and whip one up and sip it in the afternoon. Much better than coffee. Of course, those cookies look awesome too!

  29. this may sound crazy, but if you love creamy things like me, i'd suggest adding avocado. it not only keeps me full longer, but makes the texture a lot smoother rather than watery/icy. :)

  30. I find the bags of mixed berries (blue, raspberries, strawberries) quite convenient. I throw mine right into the Osterizer with vanilla yogurt, wheat germ and Almond Breeze.

Yum! I may try the spinach next time.

I already really like green smoothies with spinach, but I'm really interested in hearing how spinach tastes.I like your green smoothie/cookie combo. That's how I want my diet to be. :) Well, maybe not right now..I need to lose weight! But for maintaining, I think balance is a good thing. I'm wishing I had spinach right now so I could start. I wonder how romaine would be!?

I'm curious to know how your smoothie with kale turned out. I made one yesterday with blueberries, strawberries, kiwi, banana, soy milk, and spinach. It was fantastic! (Too bad my 18-month-old got a hold of it and drank the last third for me!) Today I made another one exactly the same except using kale as the green. I didn't like it very much. No matter how long I let the blender run, I couldn't get the kale in small enough pieces so I didn't feel like I had to chew. I know you're supposed to vary your greens, but unless I can get kale to blend a bit smoother I think I'll stick to spinach. Any suggestions?

  51. I've had some green drinks from powdered mixes, but I've never done a "real" one with fresh veggies like that- I should try it!
And those cookies, I should definitely try those, chocolate and peanut butter is always a winning combination in my book!
