acorns

After seeing Kim's and Tracy's adorable acorns, I knew that we had to make some. Of course, I didn't want to buy the felted balls. I decided we should make them, so I put my kids to work. Last week after school one day I had them roll the wool into balls. Easy enough. Then as Martha suggested, we dipped them into warm, soapy water. The directions then tell you to pass them back in forth in your hands for about 10 minutes. The kids lasted about 2 minutes. I lasted about 3 minutes. I am sure there is an easier way to do this. However, I couldn't figure it out. Maybe Sabrina knows since she made a bunch for her beautiful bobble bag.
Next time, I think I would buy the balls. I think ours just look like balls of yarn with acorn tops. But, I guess there is nothing wrong with that.

Nuh-uh! Yours are way more rustic and authentic. I think they are just adorable. And I give you an 'A' for effort on ball rolling. I would have lasted 30 seconds and then given up. I didn't even think of Sabrina's Boblicious Bag, but I'm sure that would have worked too. And you have an acorn dish! Too cute.

What about needle felting? I've never done it but those acorns look like the kinda thing you could make with it.

  6. Hi Leslie!
The bobble bag's bobbles are knit (cast on one, knit 5, 6, or 7 stiches into that one (depending on desired size), then knit for 5, 6, or 7 rows, BO, then with tail and tapestry needle, run yarn through the edges, pull to pucker into a ball, and then into the washing machine they go).

I think you could probably do a little I-cord number and with a running stitch pucker it into a ball, hit the washing machine, etc...

The other thing I would do is needle felt them!
    xoxoxo,

  14. Those are so cute! I like the look of yours also. Plus, it is a nice, fun thing to do with the kids and I am sure they love it (even if only for two minutes)! My kids would have fun with that - if only I could find acorns around my house. We just have a bunch of pine needles.

  27. Les, you sure do get an A for effort. They look pretty cute to me but if you don't like them.... everything you do can't be perfect...it just doesn't work that way. Welcome to my world! I'm sure those little buggers will still look cute accenting a fall arrangement. You'll think of something...you always do. ciao!

My girls have put a bunch of acorn tops in a bowl, which are sweet in their own right. My youngest has wild ideas for them...maybe I'll steer her towards the felted or knitted acorns!

  39. Nope- absolutely nothing wrong with those acorns! And let me just say, if all acorns looked as good, I wouldn't mind almost tripping on them every time I go for a run! :)

  40. They are still lovely! I totally agree with buying the balls--I had grand ideas of making a tree garland last christmas. Umm, I think I made about 5 balls. There has got to be a better way to make them, but I don't know what it is.

i have no idea how to knit, but I could look at your blog all day..wonderful.

  48. If you ever want to make them again, try putting dish soap directly on the wool before dunking them. It makes the felting go much, much faster than just warm soapy water!
