This is some of my favorite yarn:
I just love the texture of suede. Years ago, I was into making triangle wraps out of it and since then have been thinking about something else to use it for.
I had two balls left in my stash and decided on a cowl. Super easy and quick for a beginner or an advanced knitter.

Yarn: 2 balls Berroco Suede Needles: size 15
Cast on 40 stitches using the provisional cast on. Knit in garter stitch until piece measures 52" or until all yarn is used, ending with a RS row and leaving a 12" tail. Remove waste yarn from cast on edge and place live stitches on another needle. Using the kitchener stitch graft together both sets of live stitches to form loop. Weave in ends. Wear!
You can print the pattern here.
I'll write up an appropriate pattern and post it over in the sidebar and in ravelry. However, my mind is having a hard time thinking of a name. I'd love some help from your creative minds... please! I'll be sure to give you credit.
Thank you!

  1. it definitely reminds me of straw, so I'd suggest 'winter straw' for the pattern :)

I have to admit, I normally stick with plain old wool, sometimes with silk or other fun fibers. I don't think I'd pick up this yarn at the store if I saw it, but your design and finished product just made me put it on my wish list :)

Looks like it would feel "velluto"
or "pelle". Italian for velvet or suede. The weight of the finished piece makes it drape so nicely.

  4. I agree with Olya, I don't think I would have bought this yarn but seeing your creation makes me want to take a trip to the yarn store~

  5. Seeing this yarn always makes me smile! I used it for one of my first knits - a hot pink string bikini for my honeymoon!!! But then I used it again for a bomber looking hat for my daughter and absolutely loved it! That is a super cute pattern - too bad I only have one ball of this color left!

  9. Reminds me of leather, but in the softest, most luxurious of ways! My suggestion is: Lariat.

  10. The funny thing is that I came across some suede yarn in the stash closet just the other day. I look forward to your pattern.

I like the direction another commenter was going in with Lariat. I immediately thought Cowl Girl since it's suede like.

  11. OK. Forget my Cowl Girl suggestion. A book? No wonder it sounded so familiar. Doh!

  12. "forever bliss" - forever because it is non-ending & bliss because it simply adds bliss to an ordinary top.

    As always, love your work:)

  14. Oh, that is too funny. I am using the EXACT yarn to make a Coachella. (Not for myself... I don't do sleeveless at my ripe old age. I mean, not if I don't want people to cover their eyes and scream when they see me. So it's for my LYS. The owner is hoping to move some of the vast quantities. I'll show her your pattern, too!)

  15. How about Sea Sponge? It looks so beautiful and natural like you AND the cowl!

  16. Looks like the color of a Cafe Americano. What about that for a name or a spin on it, like....Cowl Americano or Cafe Cowl Americano.

  17. Beautiful cowl. I made a pair of boot toppers out of the Suede years ago - love that yarn. How about "embrace" or "snuggle" for the pattern name?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Beautiful cowl. Don't ask me for names, all I could think was that it looked a bit like molted snake skin. Not a good pattern name.

  19. Love the cowl. I've never used the suede before; I love the variegation. No help with a name, I'm afraid. I'm fresh out of creativity.

  20. It makes me think of bo derek for some strange reason...

  21. I am no good with names but it is so soft and light looking, just right for the weather we have here in tx (except recently).

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love it, but I'm no help with naming it. It took me nine months to come up with names of my kids...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sandbar. The color reminds me of the beautiful beaches here on Lake Michigan (when not covered in snow!) Even the pattern has a sandy beach, wave quality.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It reminds me of Copper so I have several name suggestions;
    1. Copper Cowl - aka C.C.
    2. Cuprum - Latin for Copper
    3. Simsbury - a town in Connecticut in which they mined copper in 1709

  25. The first thing I thought of was how to work the word Persuaded in there - (per-suede-ed, get it?)
But the creativity stopped right there.
This is going to take a village.

  26. I looks so incredibly soft, I can just imagine what it feels like against the skin. I love that color...would not get away with that here right now tough...it's -25C. Brrrrr.

  27. SO pretty...my suggestion is Honeycomb, the right color, pattern and sweetness.

I'd call it "made in the suede"

    or "maid in the suede"

  33. I would call the pattern Simon as in Simon Cowel - don't know if you have heard of him but he is fairly famous over here in England for the x factor and I think he will be doing the new x factor in America soon too.

Poor joke I know - It was my husband's idea.

Never knitted using different fibres before will have to experiment a bit one day in the not to distant future. :)

  34. Cute pattern. How about "Rapunzel" for a name.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lovely! I've never knit with suede before but it looks fun!

    ReplyDelete
  36. How about "Softy Suede Cowl" or "Soft as Suede Cowl"

    ReplyDelete
  37. I also thought of snake skin like another commenter, but then it looked like raffia to me...the creamy colored fiber from palm trees.

    It's beautiful. I'd just call it " Leslie's Suede".

    ReplyDelete
  40. It reminds me of a warm cappuccino. And, the word "Capucin" means cowle or hood in Italian (look up the history of cappuccino). So there you go...Leslie's Cappuccino.

  41. ...or cappuccino with a friend.

"sweet as caramel cowl" for how pretty it is.

    love this shot of you!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Very pretty!

    How about Cowl Belle?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love the look of that cowl! I also love knitting cowls. It seems the majority of my pattern perusing time of late has been for berets and cowls. This makes me wish I had some Berroco suede yarn so I could cast on immediately!

I'm terrible at naming things, so not much help here. The only thing I can even think of is 'Pursuede Cowl'.

    Thanks for sharing the pattern!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I would call your cowl "sand dune" because that's what it reminds me of...it's lovely, cream and soft...your neck must be loving it ;)

  48. I like it! Beautiful scarf!

    ReplyDelete
  49. wow...have fun choosing a name. there are some great ones suggested. I'll go with "the cowl of many names" . Ha. Anyways, it is beautiful and looks like it would be fun to knit.

  50. I love it. I just made a big warm fluffy cowl that wraps twice. It was great in the cold weather. I like this delicate cowl you've made. It seems it is a piece that will work in several seasons. A name? How about "Semolina"? Thought process: Saw your cowl and thought of wheat, then harvest, then took a look on Wikipedia and saw: "The yellowish color of durum wheat and semolina flour made from it...". And then there is the fact that the word "semolina" just sounds nice. : )

Love it! I've never knitted with suede, but consider my opinion now swayed. (That was awful.) In all honesty, I can't get enough of it.
Though I've no original name to submit, I have to cast my lot with those who've been suggesting "coffee" themed names. You want a cowl to make someone feel warm and cozy, right? Stands to reason the name should do the same.
