just socks

Tuesday, April 08, 2008

To say these are just socks, is such an understatement.
These are actually socks made out of Sundara yarn, using a simple baby cable pattern.
I really had no idea just how much I had been missing out to have never worked with this yarn. It felt wonderful in my hands, and now on my feet. The funny thing is, I still would not have known how fantastic it was if Melana hadn't given me the yarn.  Thank you, Melana.
Yarn:  Sundara, 100% superwash merino wool, in Dahlia

Needles: size 2
Pattern: basic cast on of 64 stitches.  The baby cable is achieved by working a 4 row repeat.
Rows 1-3 knit 2 purl 2.  Row 4, * k2tog and leave st on needle, knit first st and slide both off needle, P2, rep from *
Notes:  Heather mentioned that perhaps I may want to reinforce the heel by knitting a piece of thread held together with the yarn, in order to prevent holes.  I did it on this pair, and will definitely do it on all my future sock projects.  I thought that was a great tip.

I love your socks and have tried to get that yarn, but it goes so fast. I am still working on the bee socks. You have got to make them. They are awesome. Thanks for the heel tip. You're so awesome.

  7. Those are gorgeous! The pattern really shows off the gorgeous color.

I love Sundara's yarn, although I've never used the sock yarn. I made a sweater out of her sport merino and a Clapotis from the silky merino. Her colors are amazing.

  9. I know - I saw your post title & that it was Sundara yarn & thought to myself **just** socks??? With Sundara yarn????

    ;)

I've scored several skeins of her yarn - it's not horridly tough, you just have to watch for when she's going to update her shop & then follow through. I made a pair of Snicket Socks in her 'green tea' colourway and they're stunningly beautiful. I get compliments on them every time - and it's totally the yarn that gets compliments, not my very-average knitting skills!

(Am I the only person who gets holes on the balls of the feet waaaay before the heel starts wearing?)

  24. When I first saw the title of your post, I thought, "Coming from you, there's no way they could be 'just socks."

Then you acknowledge the understatement that is pattern wed with Sundara yarn. Her colors are just so lush and complex.

  27. There is nothing better than Sundara yarn - she is a genius. In fact, I keep ordering it, then starting a sock, then deciding the yarn is actually too nice to waste on socks... and then doing nothing with it. But she has such an eye for color, doesn't she? It is fabulous to work with!

I love your new header photo, too!

wow it seems like it doesn't take you much time to knit up all these things, how long does it really take? do you knit every day for so many hours? all of your work is so very beautiful. you are very very talented.

    best wishes.

Beautiful socks. I thought you should know that your raves about Sundara yarn contributed to my membership of her Seasons Club. In all honesty I have been wanting to join that past two times. I finally had enough of the great reviews and figured I should check it out myself! :)
