taking me back

Friday, August 24, 2007

Did you happen to see the Vogue Knitting 25th Anniversary issues Top 10 Hits? I gave a little chuckle when I saw this one. Yes, it was 1991. When I pulled this out of the BOX (I don't wear it), it took me back in time. I was living in San Francisco, single and carefree. Most of this was knit in my apartment, sitting on the floor, watching movies. My roommate sat next to me, knitting too. I can't remember what she was working on. What I do remember, was the taste of her homemade salsa. It was so hot it would make our noses run. She gave me the recipe, but I can never duplicate it. The stitches in here are like little minutes of time.

And did you think I would stop with the world?
Oh no baby, I took on the universe!
Have a wonderful weekend making every little stitch a memory.
Don't worry, these two treasures went back into the box!

  1. I remember you posting about these sweaters before. And when I picked up VK 25th I totally thought of you when I saw the globe sweater!! At least you can pull it off. And I mean both the look and the sweater itself! ;-)
Still, it's a great testament to your mad knitting skills...

I had a similar experience in looking through that issue. I found that DKNY Tree sweater that I made twice(!). It was HUGE, but back then, big sweaters with narrow pants were very 'in.' I'm convinced if I keep it long enough, it may come back.

  7. Wow. Thats pretty impressive- and what gets me even more than the skill you have, is how you can work a sweater circa 1991 and make it look awesome-still. ;)

LOL They're both outta this world :) Funny the things you remember about that objects you knit. Time, place, people, things. They're all knitted into the stitches.

I freakin' LOVE those sweaters! They remind me of those Coca Cola rugby shirts that everyone wore (or at least everyone in College Station, Texas wore). Which reminds me of Swatch watches...I could go on and on.....

But your sweaters are awesome and the knitting is wonderful!!!! Thanks for showing them!

  25. OK, those are pretty fugly lookin (no offense, of course) but it's saying something that you made it through the 80s as a knitter - that's a lot of intarsia!! You're probably a better knitter because of it!

  30. Oh but they look fab, I love the colors in the first sweater more than the one on the model.
I knit a sweater once with tons of teddy bears on it, one of these days I'll go through all my old photos and find a pic of it. Took me about 2 years and by the time I finished it,it was a bit small, I only wore it once to show it off!!!

  37. yay! I'll agree with others that it's so great that you saved them and modelled them for us. It makes me remember what I was wearing in the late 80's early 90's. Oh, and impressive knitting too by the way

  48. I love these sweaters. How funny! Actually, there's a Map of the World Afghan that I really really wanted to make, but I suck at intarsia. I originally wanted to make it for my in-laws.
