the process

It's so great. Watching flowers come to life. Honestly, these beauties make me so happy. And to be able to enjoy these flowers from now until September. So good.
I would love to be able to enjoy the process of making my second slouchy cardigan. However, while making my second anything, it's all about the end result. The slouchy pattern is available from the Greetings from Knit Cafe book. That pattern (along with many others in the book) has a bunch of corrections. I have them written in my book because of the first time I made that sweater. So, if you are getting ready to cast on for a slouchy cardigan, make sure you check out the corrections.
I would also love for everyone to win a book. Unfortunately I only get to have the random number generator choose one. #210, Kim from Love is all you knit. Please e-mail me and I will make sure you get the book.

another one

It's been warm around here. Mid to high 80's. No complaints.
Still, I knit away with lovely yarn while sitting at the pool. I started another slouchy cardigan. A.) Because I LOVE that sweater. (I think it has been my all time favorite sweater that has gotten the most wear of anything that I have ever knit.)
B.) Because I had some charmed in my stash that I scored on sale while it was being discontinued. (Why oh why would they discontinue this lovely yarn?) I actually saw that someone over on Ravelry had 11 balls in their stash. Definitely enough to make a slouchy.
Have you seen Vogue Knitting Stitchionary 5? The 5th in the series that is an amazing reference that would benefit every knitters library, lace knitter or not. It is full of clear instructions and charts of over 150 different designs. I sort of got lost in the photographs. They are absolutely gorgeous. I just love this book sitting on the coffee table.
Anyhow, I have one to giveaway. If you are interested, leave me a comment by Saturday the 26th at 12p.m. EST and I will draw a name.

a winner

So sorry it took me so long to get back to you with the name of a winner. As usual, the beginning of the summer is pretty much kicking my butt. I'm craving a day where there is absolutely nothing on the schedule. Anyhow, the random number generator chose number 242. Martha, you are the winner of Veronik Avery's book. Please email me with your address and I will pop it in the mail.

the weekend

You know what last weekend was? TNNA, where like past years, my mother and sister and I had an awesome girls weekend. I saw some amazing yarn, and MANY sweaters I would love to knit.
Check out this display at blue sky alpacas. Can you stand it? All those beautiful hand knits! I wanted to move right in. Posters and all. (Would love to make that sweater in the top right.)
Spud & Chloe. I know. Cute, cute, cute. (How about that baby and pattern in the poster!)
Classic Elite. One of my all time favorite booths to check out. SO many great patterns for the fall. I am in love with that sweater up there. That one over there. The one with the purple shirt under it. I know! I would love to make it.
Amy Butler. Did you know she has a line of organic yarn? Yep. And a pattern book to boot. Chalked full of beautiful things. (I wanted to move right in here, too.)
Veronik Avery. Veronik has another new book out. Filled with fabulous projects from small to large.
And guess what? She gave me a signed copy to give to one of my readers. If you are interested, leave me a comment by Saturday the 19th at 12 p.m. EST. I'll draw a name.
Oh, happy knitting.

gathered cuff cardi

I think I have my new summer "always take with" me sweater. It's light, soft and the perfect weight for those cool mornings, evenings and days.
A pretty straight forward stockinette sweater with just enough interest in the gathered cuff details. Which by the way is the only part of the pattern that I felt required some extra thought. There are increases inside of increases inside of short rows. A little tough at first for my mind to wrap around, but it finally clicked. I love when that happens.
Pattern: Gathered Cuff Cardi
Needles: US 7
Yarn: Classic Elite Premiere 7 hanks 523 favorite blue
Size: small, 35 1/2"
I do feel that this sweater grew a bit after blocking. The pattern calls for blocking pieces and then sewing them together. I always sew my sweaters together and then block them. That is how my mom taught me and that is what I will probably always do. Can't teach an old dog new tricks. (Although we are trying.)
Have a fabulous weekend!

who doesn't love a popsicle?

Okay. I just had to share our favorite new obsession. I first saw this pop maker when Martha posted it. We used it a little last summer, however, never finding the perfect "recipe". I played around a little with a recipe I found in "body and soul" (I think), changing it a bit, and found one we all love. It makes a perfect amount that fits into the 10 molds. Oh, and I must admit the metal top is a little tough to get off. But totally worth it. (Just run hot water over it.)
1 1/2 cups vanilla rice milk::1 banana::1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen berries (we like a mix) and 1/4 cup agave syrup. Puree in blender until smooth. Pour mixture into popsicle molds and freeze.
Have fun.

summer '10

They jumped. Just like in the past. (Except with bigger feet. Lead in their legs. And a dog named Trouble standing by to witness the craziness.)
I guess that makes it pretty much official. Summer '10 has begun.
And to celebrate, my sweet friend, Michelle, treated the kids to delicious cupcakes. That made everyone extremely happy.
Making me happy... seeing the rhubarb and strawberries in my CSA share. Pretty sure I'll be making this. Oh, and there were garlic scapes in there, too. Really looking forward to making this again. SO good.
Happy Days.

this and that

After two attempts at each sleeve, I finally finished the gathered cuff cardi. It wasn't the eyelet rows that gave me the trouble, (although that did require reading that part of the pattern over and over until it finally sunk in) it was just my lack of focusing. Forgetting the increases all the way up the sleeve. Doing the decreases every other row instead of every 4th row like the pattern states. Hate when that happens. I plan on sewing this baby together today.
Last weeks cookie was quinoa cloud cookies. I have never used quinoa flour. Nor have I ever toasted my flour. Happy to try something new. I also used a really delicious chocolate bar that I have been holding onto for the perfect use. And this was pretty much it.
Just as expected no cute little cloud cookie cutter in my "cookie cutter collection". I seem to have a lot of holiday cutters.
I thought about cutting them into the shape of butterflies or stars and moons or flowers, but in the end opted for a plain old circle. Mostly because it was my grandmothers. And since I don't really use cookie cutters all that often, I wanted to use hers.
I packed the last of these in lunches this morning.... as I packed my last round of lunches of the '09-'10 school year! A half day tomorrow is all we have.
Have a great day!

red white blue

I love a good cupcake recipe.

Beat butter and cream cheese until smooth and fluffy. Beat in confectioners' sugar.

I also love a long weekend.
Enjoy yours.
Knitting soon, I promise.

cinnamon scones

They're cinnamon chips. And they are so good. I mentioned I had just used my last bag and was having a hard time finding them in my area. A sweet friend mailed me a big box so this (along with chocolate chip cookies) has been my "go to" cookie the last few weeks. Not really a cookie, but I make them small, cookie size. Have them ready for after school snacks. And pack them in lunches the next day.
The dough is sticky.
So when you roll it out, make sure you use enough flour. And roll to about 1/4" thickness.
I was brushing with egg and sprinkling the cinnamon/sugar on each one individually. Until my mom was here when I made a batch. "Brush and sprinkle the entire surface and then cut", she said. Genius.
They are light and fluffy. And biting into the cinnamon chip is, well, yumm. And do you know what they go really well with?
Yarn!

Mini Cinnamon Scones
::2 cups all-purpose flour::2 TBLS sugar::1 TBLS baking powder::1 tsp salt::1 1/2 sticks cold unsalted butter, diced::2 extra large eggs, lightly beaten::1/2 cup cold heavy cream::1 cup cinnamon chips::1 egg beaten with 2 TBLS water, for egg wash::1/4 cup sugar mixed with 1 tsp cinnamon for top. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Blend in cold butter and mix until batter is in pea-sized pieces. Combine the eggs and heavy cream and add to mixture. Combine until just blended. Add cinnamon chips. Roll out onto floured surface to 1/4" thickness. Brush with egg mixture. Sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar mixture. Cut into squares and then cut each square diagonally. Place on baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake at 400˚ for 12-15 minutes.

Enjoy your weekend.

two

Jeez. Didn't mean to hold a contest and make you wait for results. Sorry about that. I ended up packing up the kids and the dog and taking a road trip to New York to visit my sister. Two full days for the cousins to get together, for the dogs to meet, and for my sister and I to enjoy it all. One day in the city and one day in the country.
It couldn't have been more perfect.
Speaking of two. I begged and pleaded and thought about offering my first born (no, not really) in order to get more books. I really wish you could all win. I ended up getting another book so there are two lucky winners!
I had the random generator choose numbers out of 1-293. A little confusion, because when I clicked on the comments it shows that there are 351 comments. But trust me (I counted three times!) there are 293.
#24 - Suzanne
Please shoot me your address and I'll make sure the book lands in your hands.
Have a beautiful day!

60 quick knits

Twenty hats, twenty scarves, twenty mittens in cascade 220. Yep, an entire book devoted to one yarn. I like that. I also really like cascade 220. I find it to be a good quality yarn, affordable (it looks like webs is having a sale), and comes in just about every color under the sun. And speaking of the sun, I find these small "tote around" projects to be the perfect projects for summer knitting.
I'm absolutely head over heals for those plaid mittens. They sort of remind me of a vintage thermos. Mittens for adults and children. Fair Isle mittens, bird cage mittens, cable cuff mittens, bunny mittens, tweed mittens, checkered mittens, the list goes on.
Libby has been wanting me to make her a beret and I think I finally found a pattern she likes. (It just so happens I have a hank of off white in the stash.) Hats for adults and children. Hats with bobbles, cables, patterns and stripes.
Fingerless gloves fall into that mitten category. I have always wanted to make myself a pair of those flip top mittens. I think I found the perfect pattern.
Twenty scarves, too. Scarves for adults and children. Stripes, cables, stripes, ruffles, eyelet and a pocket scarf. Again, the list goes on.

And you guessed it. Tara over at Soho publishing is offering this book to one of my readers.
If you are interested, leave your name by Friday the 14th at 12pm EST. I'll draw a name.

who knew?

How come no one informed me that I wouldn't want to do anything but hang out with Trouble? Who knew? Who knew that I would find absolutely everything about this dog wonderful. Who knew that I would find it charming and sweet when on her walks she sits down when you turn around to make it home, with that "who me?" look on her face telling you that she just wants to walk more and she absolutely won't budge until you walk her more. Who knew that my heart would ache a little when she takes 5 minutes every morning to make it down our hardwood stairs. Testing each step with her paw as if she is testing the temperature of water.
Last week I finally managed to sew together my 12 square's. Who knew that I wouldn't mind finding a comfortable Trouble when I returned with my camera. I think she is adjusting quite well.
Glad to hear that so many people have done or are doing the green smoothie challenge. Hope it is going as well for you, too. And for those that asked... no, kale does not make as smooth of a smoothie as spinach. I guess you just have to embrace the chunks. Maria has some great information/recipes on her blog.
Happy Day.

every day in the month of may

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good day, good month!
My sisters and I (and I am trying to drag a few local friends along) are going to do a green smoothie challenge in the month of May. I've seen these around the blogosphere but have never hopped on the wagon. In an effort to always try to feel our best we thought this would be fun. (Yes, fun!) So, every day in May we will be blending up some green goodness.
I made my first one yesterday while on the phone with my sister. I told her, "this is going to be easy... mine looks like a chocolate shake"! I used 2 cups of frozen fruit (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries) 1 frozen banana, water and 2 cups of packed baby spinach. It was good. Honestly. I bought kale today and plan on mostly using that. Feel free to join along!
There will still be cookies baked over here. Peanut Butter-Chocolate Chip Oatmeal cookies were this weeks cookie of the week. A home run. Everyone loved them, and I especially loved the dough. Biting into a peanut + chocolate chip = delicious.
Have a wonderful weekend.

outside knitting

As usual, my parents visit went way too fast. It is so nice to have my favorite knitter with me doing what we love to do. It was a gorgeous week filled with sunny days, perfect for sitting outside keeping an eye on our new baby.
I pulled out a project that hasn't seen the light of day in months. (Okay, maybe a year.) It was fun for a few rows. That seed stitch is killing me. I am going to try my hardest to do a little on this every week.
Mom read my directions out loud while I cast on for the gathered cuff cardi out of Classic Elite's gallery booklet. Don't you just love the cover of that booklet?!
(Mom's project on her lap: Vogue Knitting, winter '10, floral cardigan.)
I chose the same color, 5231, as the pattern called for. Not a usual color for me, but should be nice for the summer.
Have a great one!

absolutely no trouble at all

Meet Trouble, our newest family member.
-Age, 7.
-Mom to 39 pups.
-Driven to us from Florida by my parents. (How awesome are they.)
-Named "Trouble" by previous owner. Totally Ironic because she is absolutely, positively NO trouble at all. In fact, she almost seems to0 good to be true. As my friend Michelle put it, the perfect name for us. For Charlie, who may never get into trouble. Sweet for Libby, a sympathetic ear to tell her troubles to. Ideal for Andrew, "can someone else please start getting into trouble around here"?!

We are totally in love.
Have a great day!

before/after

Before I left for spring break, I finished the body of the foldover cowl pullover. Anxious to see what it looked like, I tried it on and was instantly disappointed.
It may be hard to see from this photo, but it is a bit big. Big in a boxy sort of way. I wore it around the house like this and the look grew on me. I was thinking that perhaps I liked it. Perhaps I liked it big and boxy. Perhaps I needed a big and boxy sweater. I decided to pack it in my suitcase and ask my mother for her advice.
Fast forward to the last evening of our trip. My mother made herself a cocktail, grabbed a beer for me and told me we were heading to the beach. "Bring your sweater", she said. "Your going to rip it out."
And so that is what I did. My mother was right. (Again.) That sweater is meant to be on the fitted side. I'll be much happier in the end. And with my mother by my side, a beer in my hand, sitting on the beach, it took the sting out of it a little. (A whole lot.)
Have a terrific weekend!

a few of my favorites

I mentioned I would be back today. 9:49 p.m. counts as today, right? You betcha.
I found myself in need of a few baby gifts around here lately, so I packed a few in my suitcase for my beach (and airplane) knitting. I seem to gravitate towards my favorite baby knits, so thought I would share.
Favorite baby bootie:
Mary Janes. I have made these before and love the pattern. I find them totally irresistable, adorable and something to treasure. Again, I used 1 ball knit picks shine sport, grass and 1 ball knit picks risata, buttermilk.
Favorite Baby Hat:
Swirled Ski Cap from Knitting for Peace. I LOVE this hat. Fun to make and always reminds me of a little scoop of swirled ice cream. I would love to one day make this hat while making the knit stitches white, the purl stitches milk chocolate and the pom pom red. A swirled scoop of ice cream with a cherry on the top.
Favorite baby sweater:
Sirdar lace-edge baby sweater. I have made this before, and am always pleased with the results. I love Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino for this project.

I find myself in a little bit of a limbo trying to figure out what to cast on for next. A lot of things swirling through my mind. Just can't seem to pull out the needles and cast on.
I'll be back tomorrow to show you what happened to my foldover cowl pullover.

spring break '10

Oh, hey there!
I always underestimate the power of re-entry. However, I feel that we are finally back in the groove around here.
Spring Break this year was pretty close to the breaks in the past.
Except that the kids are a year older.
My parents got us a dog! (More on that later.)
The eggs were harder to find.
We got up early, went to the beach, and watched the space shuttle discovery take off.
A lot of friendship bracelets were made.
And the first stingray was caught (and released).
Back tomorrow to share a few little knits.
Have a great day!
