spring crate

I've been remiss in mentioning my wonderful blue boxes of KnitCrate that brighten my day once a month!  Oh, how I love that day!

The March Crate's had me swooning over the colors.
Their theme this month was Metropolis.
A city rises between the desert and turquoise seas; the faded chalk colors of stucco create channels for busy passerby.

The standard crate carried the classic Knitologie Worsted,  A 100% Superwash Merino made in Peru exclusively for KnitCrate.  Four different colors that together form a gentle gradient.  Each individual skein is 112 yds totaling 448 yards one the four skeins in the crate.
I can't wait to make something out of this!
The sock crate featured cozy La Brebis Warmer.  70% Superwash Merino, 20% Sure Alpaca and 10% Nylon.  400% yards of this fingering weight goodness in my perfect shade.  I truly would love to finally knit Steve a pair of socks and this just might be the skien!

As always you can get 20% off your first KnitCrate by entering FKW20 at checkout.

Happy Mail Day!

whispers

I adore making baby items.  My go to sweater is the Barbie Lou,  however,  my friend Kim, mentioned this pattern and I figured I would give it a go.  I have a lot of stash yarn (thanks for my Knitcrates!) that I am trying to use and thought I would branch out and try a new pattern.

We headed out to Bozeman, Montana to see my son Charlie this week and I decided to pack this cute project.  I thought this yarn would be perfect for a baby girl.  A super wash merino with a bit of tinsel will be perfect for the mama.  It feels amazing and the colors are sweet.  Yet,  I'm not sure the yarn is the best choice for this pattern.  A solid would definitely show the details of the pattern a lot better.  Nevertheless, I'm sticking with it since it's all I packed!

toast

The knit I love to wear the most is hands down (Ha! Hands down, get it?!) TOAST mitts. Well, don't get me wrong... sweaters are my number one knit. However, the most worn knit I wear is TOAST.
I throw them on in the morning when the house is cold and dark and I stumble to the coffee maker.  They are a great addition to my jammies.
I throw them on when I'm wearing a t-shirt or a sweater and need just an extra something to warm my body.
I throw them on with a coat to pull over my fingers when I'm walking or driving.  They add a little extra when the steering wheel is too cold.
There truly isn't a time I don't wear them.
I must take them on and off a half a dozen times in one day.
And they are that easy to wear.  Pull down, push up, take off!
The yarn I used in my latest batch of TOAST was from my November Knitcrate.  I was thrilled when my box arrived knowing immediately that the yarn inside must be TOAST mitts. (That's the beauty of having stash!)  I knew they would be a tiny bit short of the 11" that the pattern calls for, but that would be fine.  These measure almost 10".  To make sure I would have the same amount per mitt, I used my kitchen scale.  Everyone always talks about using their scale, so I finally felt like one of the cool kids on the block.  I loved the yarn and color so much, I snagged an extra skein of each for another pair to gift.
Yarn:  Vidalana Ambiant Worsted.  !00% Peruvian Highland Wool.  100 yards/50 grams
Color:  Titan
Color: Michelangelo
Color:  Vanezia
Color:  Fresco

Yarn at my doorstep never looked so good!

august and september

I have been very remiss in showing off my beautiful Knitcrates. But that certainly doesn't mean I love them any less. Just seeing that blue box in my mailbox sends my excitement to a new level!
Augusts Knitcrate came when the air was warm and my heart was trying to hold onto the last bit of summer.  Don't get me wrong.  I LOVE autumn.  But seeing the summer slip away always gets me a little sad.
These  soft colors were a welcome sight.  I fell in love with this mint color in the Membership Crate.  (And I already have a project planned for it... more on that later.)

tag your essential worker

I am so slow to show this gorgeous yarn that has been keeping my mailbox happy these last few months.  If you are like me, mail is an exciting thing especially in these times.

*I look at the mail in the mailbox.
*I wonder if I should just let it sit there.
*I come back to the mail donned with my gloves and paper bag.
*I throw all the mail into the bag.
*I stare at the mail and wonder if I can really wait to open those beautiful blue boxes.  I can't.
*I wipe down the blue box.
*I grab my scissors to cut the tape.
*I open the box.  (Tissue is covering the yarn so I still can't see it.)
*I remove my gloves.
*I wash my hands and my scissors.
ALL the while with anticipation as to what the contents are.

These are weird times.  And this is the excitement of the days the blue box arrives.

This company is so wonderful and is giving away 1000 crates to our heroes working as essential workers during this time.  Do you know a doctor, nurse, postal worker, teacher or other essential worker that may need a special treat during this time?  You can tag them here on Instagram or here on Facebook and Knitcrate will message them with a code to collect their free crate.
This was April's Knitcrate.  2 skeins of a fun yarn sporting a little sparkle.  I DO love a little sparkle.  Not sure what I will make with it, but the Diamond colorway will definitely make it onto my needles soon.
March had me ooooing and ahhhhing over this yumminess in it's Crate.   100% baby alpaca yarn,  super lightweight and incredibly dreamy.  I received colorway Ancient Pines and the knit pattern is the Decumani Hat and Cowl.  A unisex pattern perfect for a project on the go.
February's membership knitcrate contained to skeins of Audine Wools Shine Sport.  350 yards 80% Superwash merino, 20% Tencel in Sky colorway.  Another duet this time as a Hat and Handwarmers.
I'm sure those handwarmers will be a summer travel project.  If we ever get to leave the house.

january knitcrate

Well, hello February. I see spring around the corner!
February 4th to do:  Pay my last tuition check to the University of Colorado.  Wow is that a great feeling! I feel like having a party!
February 5th to do:  I really like this list.  I'm at my moms house in Orlando and sitting with my mom affords me some time to get some things accomplished.  I've been needing to put thumbs in a couple of pair of mitts, so this is a great time to be able to do that.  I also make a big batch of granola eveerytime I'm at my mom's.  My mom, the caretakers and and my sisters all love it.  Not to mention myself!  The mexican wedding cookies are one of my moms favorite so I can't wait till she tries them again.
It dawned on me I forgot to mention the beautiful Knitcrate that arrived in January.  Such happy colors inside that beautiful blue box.  I LOVE this subscription box and if I don't make what they suggest with the yarn, I get to grow my stash yarn supply.  Always a good thing.
In January, Knitcrate collaborated with Louis Boria of Brooklyn Boy Knits.  I really like the knit pattern, the Upside-Down Cowl, inspired from the Netflix show "Stranger Things".  (I am a big fan of that show!)  It's a double layered reversible cowl.  Really looks like a fun knit!
Knit Pattern:  Upside-Down Cowl
Yarn:  Knitologie Safari Sunset and Knitologie Golden Lion  Both 100% SW Merino.  (There are also two other color ways.)
This was the adorable "extra" in my box.  Not sure exactly what I will do with it, but it does fit perfectly on the top of my wine bottle!  😍

november knitcrate

Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

The beautiful blue Knitcrate box is always a fun mail day.  In my mind, November's Knitcrate patterns were some of the best. Every pattern, crochet and knit, were fabulous.  I truly would be interested in all of them.  The theme is "beneath the waves" which explores our planet's extraordinary undersea life and landscape, through colors, shimmering textures and unique patterns.
My knitcrate favorite yarn made another appearance and I was thrilled to see the yarn and color (Betta) pop up in my crate.

Pattern: As usual there are always a choice of Knit or Crochet patterns.
Knitting :: Caudil Fin Cap & Mitts
        Crochet  :: Antidunes Cowl

Yarn:  2 skeins Knitologie Glowing Worsted.  40% Merino Wool, 30% Silk, and 30% Alpaca.  Truly a new favorite yarn,  It's so soft and squishy!
The extra ::  Ahmad Tea  - I drink so much tea in the winter, so this is a perfect partner to my knitting!

april knitcrate

We are having the most spectacular Spring day!  I hope you are, too!
I am currently sitting in the car dealership getting my 30,000 mile service.  They told me it would take a couple of hours.  If I have my computer or my knitting I can sit anywhere!  Especially if it's near a window!
April's Knitcrate is bright and cheery, just like today.  The theme is Entomology.  Colorways inspired or matched up to some great photos of insects!
Membership Crate:
Yarn :: 2 skeins Audine Wools Sigh DK  85% Merino Wool, 15% Cashmere 302 yards.  It is pure yummy.  And this cheerful red with warm undertones color is inspired by everyone's favorite aphid-eater, the ladybug.
As always 2 projects.
Knitting ::  Canopy by Destiny Meyer.  A classic top-down, triangle shawl, inspired by the canopy walk of Whiting Forest.
Crochet ::  Chrysalis by Liliana Buce-Chmelko.  A spring shoulder warmer.  Shorter than a scarf but just right for throwing over your shoulders.  It's a personal blanket with a lot more style.
The Sock Crate ::

march knitcrate

Awe. March has a lovely knitcrate. I am so loving this subtle sparkle in this super wash Merino.
Can you see it?  You may have to zoom in as it is ever so soft.  That's what makes me really love it.
The theme is Whisper.  The time when we approach a change of season, from chilly Winter to the early promise of Spring.  Or, in other parts of the world, where we change forth heat of Summer to the hope of a gentler Autumn.  Transition time.
Sock crate.
Yarn ::  Vidalana Shimmer Sock.  70% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon, 10% Stellina.

february knitcrate

Can you believe that tomorrow is March 1st?!!! SO crazy!
So, before the calendar actually flips, lets look at February's Knitcrate!
The theme is Good Vibes Only, a wish for 2019 to be better for everyone in our community and beyond.  A time of reflection on ourselves and our attitudes, and a call for us to be supportive of each other.  I personally try to live my life this way, so I totally felt as if I shouted a big "Hell Yes!" when I read this theme.  To support each other in every aspect of life... it truly is that simple.
Membership Crate.
Yarn :: 2 skeins Halo DK.   236 beautiful yards of 50% Alpaca, 30% Wool, and 20% Nylon.  A surprise of either two color ways.  Iridescent, glowing green Malachite and luminous purple, Electric Abalone.
Pattern ::  As always, 2 patterns.  The knitting pattern featured knitting designer Kiri Fitzgerald's Belita scarf, a combination of lace and squishy stitches.  It looks like a super fun knit.  And the crochet pattern by Jennifer Hayes.  Belle Askew is a shawl with a triangular shape featuring surprising details even to the knitter!
Sock Crate.
Yarn :: Snow Stylish.  Well, this is one colorway I truly flipped over.  And doesn't the yarn knit into something so gosh darn amazing?!!!  Pure happiness!
Pattern ::  Maeve Zana designed this awesome pattern named Striped Lightning.  Maeve utilized the pooling of this variegated colorway in a truly exceptional way, celebrating the color changes with high-relief twisted stitches.

december knitcrate

Hello sweet friends to knit with!  Happy HAPPY new year to you!  It's page 2 of your 2019 365 page book.  How exciting!  I have a new list of things I would like to work on for this year.  And, of course, I always set some knitting goals.  Because, well, that is what makes my heart sing most.
I'll fill you in later on in the week of how I organize my knitting goals.  But first, I wanted to share the December Knitcrates.
December sock crate is full of self striping fun.  The skeins cycle through four bold stripes of color (ending and starting with the same shade).  I am super excited to cast on for these and see these come to life.
And this cute little pin came in the sock crate as well.  I'm thrilled to start a little collection to decorate my bag! :)
Yarn: Vidalana Ember sport in Holly  (70% Merino wool, 20% nylon, 10% silk)
Pattern:  Holiday Candy by Myna Vayner
December membership crate included 2 skeins of heathered chunky.  And as always, two patterns.  One knit and one crochet.  I love that you can always just stash your yarn or use it for a different pattern.  I'm thinking of a chunky knit beanie with a faux pom for this yarn.

Yarn:  Vidalana Heathered Chunky in Clementine  100% wool
Pattern: knit, Breaks in the Line
             crochet, Snow Bonnet

As always, your first crate is 20% off by using code FKW20 at checkout.

New Year!
New Projects!
Now let's get knitting!

november knitcrate

I can't even begin to tell you what a treat it is to open my mailbox and see this lovely blue box.  And then when the beauty drops out, I fall in love each and every time.
November's knitcrate was such a beauty. Jewel toned colorways sprinkled with a bit of sparkle.  Oh ya! I instantly wanted to knit a sweater out of this yummy yarn.  However it is a Superwash Merino so I think I will stick to the pattern included.  Superwash Merino is best for those lovely accessories!
The November Crate included not one but three patterns for this lovely yarn.
Yarn:  Uru.yarn  Sugared Worsted  2 skeins.  70% Merino, 20% Nylon, and 10% Stellina.  4 different colorways.  I received Wolves colorway.  Also available in Roses, Gilded and Twilight.
Pattern:  Well, like I said, there just happens to be three knit patterns.  Mitts, a cowl and a hat.  As always, there is one crochet pattern.
I'm not sure the photos show the beautiful sparkle in these yarns but it's there, I promise!  Twinkle toes ahead with this sock crate!  A sparklying, Stellina-laden yarn for a new pair of socks.

Yarn:  Uru.yarn  Sugared sock.  Available in two exclusive colorways.  I received the Apple, but Amber was lovely as well.
Pattern:  A sweet ankle sock.  Ribbons of Gratitude.

I had a friend to knit with contact me and tell me she was ordering her friend a year subscription of the sockcrate.  Every other month.  What a lovely gift.

As always, your first crate is 20% off by using code FKW20 at checkout.

Happy December, Friends!

october knitcrate

Well,  my travel schedule kept me from getting to this space much in October.  Now that I have some time to hunker in, I plan on spending more time here.  Although it is November, I still want to share with you October's knitcrate.  It's one of those things I feel that I can't move on until I do!
This months theme is Verdigris.  The patina of time, faded, peeling and rubbed-down boards; pastel-soft matte finished, ceramic smoothness, and the play of shadow and light on everyday surfaces.

I'll be casting on using this month's crate as soon as I finish a couple of things on my needles. (More on that later.)
The October membership crate had me pretty excited.  The yarn and the knit pattern!  (You remember you always get a crochet pattern too if that is your passion.)
Yarn:  2 skeins of Audine Wools.  50% peruvian alpaca, 30% merino wool, 20% nylon.  It's pure yumminess and I can't wait to see the drape that will be achieved using this yarn.
Pattern:  Huerta.  It's a triangle shawl worked flat from the narrow point to one of the edges, combining two different pattern motifs.
The sock artisan crate has me equally excited.  A superfine fingering weight yarn double stranded for this months sock pattern.
Yarn:  Artistic Ewe Yarns in Celery Stalk  75% Superwash Merino, 25% nylon
Pattern:  Doubledown  a quick ankle sock that uses the yarn double-stranded for a quick effect!  (Super excited as I love ankle socks!)
Extra:  Chiaogoo 40"  US size 2 needles to make the socks extra quick using the magic loop method.

If you haven't tried a Knitcrate and are interested in making mail days exciting, you can get 20% off your first crate by entering code FKW20 at checkout!

september knitcrate

The first mail I opened when I arrived home from Italy was my Knitcrate boxes.  I mean, come on.  When you see that blue box... your heart just skips a beat!
It also seams like fall has suddenly arrived.  So, these colors were a welcome addition to my knitting bags!
Knitcrate membership crate:
Yarn:  Vidalana Dream  75% Merino, 15% silk, 10% cashmere.  (100% dreamy)  There are three possible color ways.  Lavender night, Pimento and I was so happy to receive Tapenade.
Pattern:  The knit pattern is Westward by Anne Podlesak.  A beautiful shawl worked from one short corner to the opposite edge, and is designed to be worn on the bias.
The crochet pattern is Las Mananitas De Blanca by Cecelia Losanda.
The sock artisan crate.
I honestly wish I was a faster sock knitter.  I would have an entire drawer full of hand knit socks.
Yarn:  75% Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon  450 beautiful yards of fingering weight.
Pattern:  Falling Petals.  A simple but lovely pattern that still gives the yarn the ability to show its beauty.
Extra:  A petal wheel highlighter set!  This fun little extra made this highlighting lover super happy!

august knitcrate

August's knitcrate came in like a breath of fresh air. I just loved the cool colors I received in both of these crates! (You remember, that's part of the fun... you never know what surprise lies within!)
The theme for August's membership crate is Indigo Glow.  It's all about the stunning oceanic tones, deep teals, seashell pinks and stonewashed grays.  Each membership crate will get two skeins of one of Ura.Yarn Speckled Singles.
A new "brochure" instead of the single cards.  I really like this new look.  You still have the option to print out the pattern, however, now the patterns are included.  Bonus!  I also like all the information about the designers and dyers.
Yarn:  Ura.Yarn Speckled singles.  417 yards of single spun fingerling weight.  100% super wash merino.
Pattern:  Knit:  Gullywasher.  A triangle shawl with great texture designed by Carissa Browning.
Crochet:  Caribbean Escape.  An expansive crochet shawl with epic fine designed by Jennifer Dickerson.
Ahhhhh.  The August Sock Crate.  A single hank of lovely sock yarn in one of two color ways.  My crate came with Seashell. However I would have been just as happy with Pearl; a beautiful pearly grey.
Yarn:  DagmarEir Lifeboat.  463 yards of 75% super wash merino, 25% nylon sockyarn.
Pattern:  Cascade Socks by Sandi Rosner.  (LOVE!)
Extra:  Cat-eared stitch markers perfect for this project!

If you still haven't tried a knitcrate, you totally should!  AND you can get 20% off your first crate using code FKW20.

july knitcrate

Oh my goodness was I ever excited to receive July's Knitcrate's. Honestly... JOY in a box!
The theme was Modern Primary.
"Explore a fresh look at the familiar rainbow with bold, intense color!  Tangerine, grass green and sunshine yellow play against navy and ultraviolet.  Mix and match this month's pigmented hues with rich neutrals and camel, caramel and stark white for pieces that pop!"
This months sock crate might have been my favorite.  I truly almost squealed when I saw the colorful insert, the bright yarn and the awesome project bag!  A reminder written on my bag on how to do Kitchener stitch?!  Well... that is ALWAYS necessary when I am knitting socks. I don't know why I can't ever remember that stitch!  Two beautiful possible colors to receive of the sock yarn.
Yarn:  Pictured Yarns in Tetra Colorway.  420 yards of 75% super wash 25% nylon.
Pattern:  Summer Rain by Hannah Woodhead
Extra:  Yep.  The most wonderful little project bag.
I really love the yarn + pattern I received with the membership crate.
There were four possible colors and to be quite honest I would have been happy with all of them!
I'm all over the knitting project for this one!  US size 10 needles makes this project a quick one.

Yarn:  Knitologie Bouncy Worsted.  180 yards of 100% super wash merino.  This color way is Dashboard.
Pattern:  As always, a knitting pattern and a crochet pattern.
Knitting:  Beach Ball Cowl by Virginia Sattler-Reimer
Crochet:  Yoga Socks by Virginia Sattler-Reimer

If you want to try a knitcrate, your first crate is 20% off when ordering with code FKW20!

june knitcrate

I think I have mentioned before, but I have never been disappointed with a Knitcrate. You remember what it is, right? A yarn subscription service where a surprise box of yarn arrives in your mailbox! You can choose a monthly option or not. It's all up to you.
This months theme is Ice Scream!  Yes.  I sort of let out a little yelp when I opened this box.

The fresh neons and icy brights of this month's shipments have you screaming for more.  Celebrate the season with these popping, primary tones with a twist.  These electric hues remind us of afternoons spent poolside, energetic beach towns, and the sizzling heat of summer days.

The yarn is just soooooo yummy.  And although I am not a huge shawl maker, I thought the knit pattern that came with this months crate had me all... whoa.  That fringe!  I love fringe.
The Membership Crate:
Yarn: 2 skeins of Vidalana.  80% Superwash Merino, 10% Nylon and 10% Cashmere.  That cashmere gives it that super deliciousness.   (There are four different colors.  I just happened to receive Chewy.)

The patterns.  As always, there is both knit pattern and a crochet pattern.

Knit pattern:  Minty Fresh by Taiga Hilliard.  A traditional triangular shawl amped up with a leaf lace motif and fringe.  I love it.

Crochet pattern:  Lemoncello by Kalurah Hudson.  A lightweight poncho that can be worn a multiple of ways.  I really like this, too.  If I was a crocheter I would consider making this.  But knitting is my one true love.

As always, a $63.00 value for $24.99.

If interested in ordering, use the code FKW20 to receive 20% off your first knitcrate!  (Code works on all crates.)
